Chavez Comes Off the Disabled List and Into the Yankees’ Lineup
It had been so long since Eric Chavez saw his name on the Yankees lineup card that, as he got dressed Tuesday afternoon, the veteran infielder admitted he was not sure when he had last played in a major league game.
“It’s been what? Nine weeks? Ten weeks?” Chavez said.
It had actually been closer to 12. Chavez started at third base for the Yankees against the Mariners on Tuesday night, ending an 82-day stay on the disabled list that began when he broke a bone in his left foot May 5.
Since then, Chavez has rehabilitated his foot but also endured a variety of unrelated setbacks. At one point, he battled a kidney stone; at another, his back flared up. Dealing with those complications was so maddening that Chavez, 33, said he briefly considered retirement.
The ordeal was even more frustrating, Chavez said, because he had started the season so well. When he got hurt, he was hitting .303 and enjoying his role as a fill-in for first baseman Mark Teixeira and third baseman Alex Rodriguez.
“When I broke my foot, it was a shock — I wasn’t ready for that, that’s for sure,” Chavez said. “My frustration was pretty high.”
After completing his rehabilitation over the past weekend, however, Chavez felt rejuvenated. He said he believed he could hit better than he was before he was injured.
“I was swinging the bat really well in my rehab at-bats,” he said, adding “I actually felt better in those at-bats than I did here. Obviously minor league pitching, but more myself, how I felt. Hopefully I can translate that over.”
Chavez’s return is even more important to the Yankees since Rodriguez is now on the disabled list after arthroscopic knee surgery. Manager Joe Girardi is well aware of the litany of injuries Chavez has had in his 14 seasons (and thus will not overwork him). And while the rookie Eduardo Nunez will still get plenty of playing time at third, Girardi said there was value in having an experienced player like Chavez available.
“This guy has played extremely well for us when he’s been healthy,” Girardi said. “We wanted to get him right back out there. I think he can help us a lot. He can play some third, he can play some first, there’s different things he can do. If he swings the bat like he did before he left, he can help us a lot.”
SEARCHING FOR SOLUTIONS Three days after a shave failed to help end the Seattle Mariners losing streak, Manager Eric Wedge tried a change of routine in hopes of snapping the 16-game losing streak his team brought into Tuesday. Instead of the standard early and late buses that many teams use to get players to the ballpark on the road, Wedge canceled batting practice Tuesday and told his players to travel to Yankee Stadium together on one bus that left the team hotel at 4 p.m.
The goal, Wedge said, was to get the players to avoid thinking about anything relating to the game until it was time to leave. He told them to stay away from televisions, newspapers, the Internet or anything that might remind them of the previous day’s game or the losing streak.
“We’re trying to do everything we can to help them snap this thing,” Wedge said. “I feel like they’re all carrying the weight of the world around on their shoulders. I think everyone is, to a certain extent. Sometimes you’ve got to mentally remove yourself from all this.”
Wedge is, understandably, searching for potential solutions wherever he can find them. On Saturday, he shaved his trademark mustache hoping that might the change the Mariners’ luck. When that did not work, Wedge figured he would move on to the pregame routine.
“When you get this deep into it, you’re pretty much doing everything you can,” he said.
SORIANO CLOSE TO RETURN Rafael Soriano pitched in back-to-back minor league games Sunday and Monday, and that may be the final test for the right-handed reliever before he is activated from the disabled list. Joe Girardi said Soriano would rejoin the Yankees bullpen soon, perhaps on Wednesday but more likely Thursday. Soriano went on the disabled list May 17 with right elbow inflammation.
Girardi said the uncertainty of Soriano’s return was because the Yankees want to see how Soriano’s elbow responds to the consecutive appearances before activating him.
“He felt good today,” Girardi said. “It was normal soreness, in a sense, that you’d have after you’ve thrown two days and hadn’t thrown for a while. We’ll re-evaluate him tomorrow and go from there.”
