Katharine Beals: Assessing K-12 Assessments

Katharine Beals, PhD analyzes the problems with K-12 assessments Rosetta Stone Languages and recommends ways teachers and administrators can utilize assessments more effectively.Assessing K12 Assessmentsby Katharine BealsIntroductionAs the 2010-2011 school year enters its final marking period, as states wrap up their No Child Left Behind tests, and as colleges and selective high schools send out their admissions decisions, ‘tis the season of K12 assessments. They come in all shapes and sizes and measure all kinds of things, including the knowledge of numbers from 1 to 1000:For all the assessing that assessments do, how often are they themselves assessed? Where do we even begin? Let’s begin at the top. In assessment above, a student, prompted to write down a number that is 200 more than a given a number, has written down a number that instead is 400 more. What sort of mistake is this? What, specifically, does it indicate about the student’s ability to do the task that is apparently being assessed here: adding ones, tens and hundreds to a given three-digit number? What do the rest of the student’s answers indicate about his/her ability? With all this in mind, should this assessment be graded, and, if so, how? How many points should the student lose? What other consequences or follow-up measures should ensue as a result of the student’s mistake? The purposes of K12 assessments:One way to address these last questions is to step back and consider K12 assessments in general. Whether the assessment Rosetta Stone Cheap tool is a test, a homework assignment, or an in-class activity, what purposes does it serve? Most immediately, assessments provide feedback: feedback to the student and his or her parents about how he or she is doing, as well as feedback to the teacher. Ideally, the teacher gains insight not just into how the student is doing, but also into how effectively he or she is teaching this student in particular and the class as a whole. Ideally, assessment motivates self-reflection in student and teacher alike.Related to this, assessments offer incentives: Steelers Jerseys to the student to work hard and adjust his/her study habits as needed; to the teacher to adjust, as needed, his or her teaching strategies or to provide remediation to particular students.Beyond the classroom and the family, assessments (especially course grades, test scores, and teacher recommendations) help admissions committees decide whom to admit into gifted programs, selective high schools, or particular colleges. They help potential employers decide whom to hire. When assessments are standardized and administered across multiple classrooms and schools, as in No Child Left Behind tests, they also provide information to principals about how different classrooms are doing, and information to the school, the government, and the public about how this school compares with others. With this in mind, let’s assess the assessments. How well do different K12 assessments serve these Rosetta Stone Spain Spanish V3 purposes?

Fighting talk as Jackson aims to justify pivotal role

Ruaridh Jackson believes he is beginning to prove he has what it takes to become the midfield general Scottish rugby badly needs. Having looked very much a work in progress against Ireland last month, the 23-year-old has the talent to be an all-round play-maker but must show he can run a game. Rosetta Stone Spanish At Twickenham on Sunday, he demonstrated he is a quick learner. The Ireland game was more of a learning curve for me and I maybe put a bit of that into practice for the England game, he said. I just need to keep progressing. Every game I’m trying to pick up as much as possible in terms of game management because that’s obviously the most important thing as a 10. There remains a strong argument that if Andy Robinson, the head coach, is true to his word that trying to find a way to win every match is his priority, then he should be starting games with Dan Parks before introducing his former Glasgow Warriors understudy when things loosen up.Though more limited in his range of play, Parks can steer the team into the right areas to have a chance of winning matches. However, the decision to look to the future has been eased by his loss of form, while Jackson went some way towards justifying it last weekend. I had the backing of another start and the confidence of the guys around me, he said. I’m settling in with the surroundings and the Rosetta Stone Spanish V3 pace of the game and it definitely felt a bit more comfortable out there. While Jackson may have much to learn in management, he is showing signs of being aware of something Robinson himself said he had to learn after being sacked by England, namely the capacity to manage those above him.Jackson was masterful when referring to the generous words said about him by Jonny Wilkinson, England’s World Cup-winning stand-off expressing limited gratitude while flattering Gregor Townsend, Scotland’s attack coach. I didn’t have an Englishman pinned on the wall, but I certainly watched him and he was an incredible player, Jackson replied when asked if Wilkinson had been among his heroes.Asked who was, he continued: Toony (Townsend) was a great player to watch, one of the best sort of 10s. Stephen Larkham was another one. He looked incredibly comfortable on the ball and like he had acres of time which is remarkable considering the actual time you get. I loved the way he attacked a man and ran with the ball. For those who remember how close Larkham was to playing in Scotland a few years ago when signed by the consortium that owned Edinburgh just before it went out of business, the idea of what might have happened had Jackson had the chance to work with the great Wallaby fly-half is tantalising. What Larkham also possessed was mental and physical courage, something Jackson knows is required to play the way he is being asked to. The pace of the game and the time on the ball is a lot less, but the more and more I can force myself to do it the better. I just can’t shirk any responsibilities there and if I get hit after the ball so be it, I’ve just got to get up and keep doing it, he said. If I can stamp my style of game on to the team as much as possible that’s hopefully why I’ve been picked, and what I’ll be looking to do. The flatter I can play the more guys I can get into the game and Rosetta Stone Portuguese running into space the better. Hopefully we can keep developing that and start making some good breaks and good attacks, and that will stand us in good stead. As for continuing questions about his ability to kick the ball at the right time into the right place, he believes he is answering his critics. I think I proved at the weekend that I can hit these kicks, he said. It’s something I’ve been working hard on this season with Duncan Hodge and I’ll keep working on it, as well as on my strengths. If I can become as rounded a player as I can that will be the best thing. As long as I’ve got the backing of the coaches and they know what I can do, that’s the most important thing for me personally. Everyone’s open to their opinions and I’m not going to be insulted by what anyone ever thinks.

What Is Tai Chi?

Tai chi has many myths about its origins. One of those myths says that Rosetta Stone one day the Taoist monk Chang San-feng wasdisturbed by the sounds of a snake and a crane fighting in hiscourtyard. Each time the crane's rapierlike beak stabbed, the flexiblesnake twisted out of reach. And the crane's wings, like shields, protected its long neck from the snake's striking head. According tothe myth, from observing this battle, Chang San-feng developed the artof tai chi chuan, which is based on the concept of yielding in the faceof aggression.?2007 Publications International, Ltd.The myth of the snake and the craneexhibits the ideas of tai chi.The MythAs we have seen, theimages conveyed in the telling of a myth lend themselves well to thespirit and the ideas of tai chi chuan. For this reason, many myths havesprung up around the art of tai chi and its principal actors, and ChangSan-feng figures prominently in many Rosetta Stone V3 of them.Another famous mythdepicts Chang San-feng seeking the fabled elixir of life, a liquidformula that reputedly makes one immortal. One night, while in a deepsleep after an exhausting search for the elixir, the movements of taichi chaun were revealed to him in a dream. After careful reflection, it occurred to him that perhapsthe secret of the elixir was related to these movements. It dawned onhim that the idea of drinking the elixir of immortality was actually anallegory in which the set of tai chi exercises revealed in the dreamrepresented the formula for the elixir itself. He noted that chi in thebody exhibited a number of properties similar to liquids. It flows, forexample, through the many acupuncture channels. He also noted that whenthe chi flows in abundance, good health prevails, and when it isblocked, illness soon follows.Like water, chi in the body can also be affected by certainnatural forces, such as the gravitational pull of the moon. He finallyrealized that the liquid elixir could actually represent chi. Byperforming the movements revealed to him, Chang San-feng concluded, hewould be developing chi and incorporating it into his body as anessential life- and health-giving force.Continue reading to learn some reasons Rosetta Stone German V3 behind the creation of tai chi and to discover useful applications of the practice. To learn more about tai chi and Taoism, see:Tai ChiTaoist PhilosophyChi Kung ExercisesTaoism and ChiHistory of Asia.

Bires: Nothing 'free' about free agent Taylor

With the NFL labor dispute soon to be over, the Steelers willstart the process of figuring out who to bring to trainingcamp. The recent off-season troubles - Rashard Mendenhall's tweets,Hines Ward's DUI and James Harrison's unsavory comments in Men'sJournal - will soon be forgotten. Sittsburgh Steelers Jerseys With owners and players moving ever closer to resolving theirdifferences, the first order of business will be establishing datesfor free-agent signings so teams can get their rosters inorder. That figures to be a busy time for the Steelers, who have closeto 20 players from last year without contracts for 2011.Obviously, the Steelers' top priority is Ike Taylor.Even though he's never been to the Pro Bowl, Taylor will likelycommand big bucks on the open market. Though he's often toldmembers of the local media that he wants to finish his career here,he's also been known to tell national media types that Rashard Mendenhall Jersey he can fitin anywhere if he and his agent can't get a new deal done inPittsburgh.Taylor is one of the top corners available in the free-agentmarket. However, Oakland's Nnamdi Asomugha is easily the best ofthe bunch. But certainly Taylor is right behind in a group thatincludes Cincinnati's Jonathan Joseph and Antonio Cromartie of theNew York Jets.Taylor may be getting up in age -- he turned 31 in May -- butgiven the problems Bryant McFadden and William Gay had last season, locking up Taylor is a must.Take away Taylor, and the Steelers would go to St. Vincent withperhaps the most suspect group of cornerbacks in the league. It wouldn't be surprising if the Steelers also re-sign Gay,though. He had a roller-coaster performance last year, solid someof the time but abysmal at others. But because the lockoutprevented teams from holding mini-camp and OTAs during theoff-season, the two corners the Steelers drafted in April -- CurtisBrown of Texas (third round) and Cortez Allen of The Citadel(fourth round) -- will go in to camp with no idea of how DickLeBeau's defense operates. So, Gay's knowledge of the Steelers'complex defense will certainly improve his chances of stickingaround. But it's Taylor who's the corner the Steelers must keep. Thereare still going to be teams that want him, teams such asPhiladelphia, Houston, Arizona and even Baltimore. It's hard to imagine Taylor signing with the Ravens. But hewants one more big contract.Five years ago, he got a five-year deal worth $22.5 million thatincluded a $6.4 million signing bonus. His base salary last seasonwas $3.75 million. It was money well spent. It would behoove the Steelers Chris Kemoeatu Jersey to once again make Taylor an offerhe can't refuse.

In most depth charts around the net, he projects as the backup tackle

But Francois is a very versatile player and can play any spot along the Sittsburgh Steelers Jerseys front three. He should see no shortage of playing time this evening.Daniel Kilgore (Guard) Kilgore had a very good offseason in the transition from the college ranks to the pro's. It seems on the surface like he has a good shot at making this ball club as a backup. He will definitely be someone worth keeping an eye on moving forward.Sean Gardner/Getty ImagesThadeus Gibson (Linebacker) Gibson was obtained off of the Steelers practice squad last year and seems to be showing some progress. He will have an opportunity to really show Fangio and Harbaugh what he is bringing tonight. He will be fired up and ready to get after the Saints quarterback whether that be Chase Daniel or Sean Canfield.Kenny Rowe (Linebacker) Rowe was a menace at Oregon. Although he played on the outside, the 49ers would be ill-advised to play him out there. His game would translate better on the inside. With Scott McKillop being cut yesterday, Rowe couldcertainlyfind his way on to the roster if he plays good in these next four games.Aldon Smith (Linebacker) There is no doubt that Smith will make the team. He will, however need to show that he is starter-worthy. He will have to earn his keep and come up from the second team. It is assumed that both Brooks and Haralson will be ahead of him on the depth chart to start with.*Colin Kaepernick (Quarterback) This will perhaps be the most watched player of tonight's game. Kaepernick has already been earning plenty of nicknames by the fanbase. Ben Roethlisberger Jersey He will need to play lights out in order for any of those names to stick. And should he play better than Alex Smith, it's quite in the realm of possibility that we could see this very young and talented quarterback eventually start in 2011.Jeremiah Masoli (Quarterback) Masoli is a very interesting prospect. At first, the 49ers brought him in as a running back due to his excellent athletic ability and thorough understanding of the game. He will have a long way to go but may wind up being the teams third string quarterback. He played well in camp and now it is time for him to play well in the fourth quarter of these preseason games. Fun fact: Masoli is a San Francisco native and grew up rooting for the Niners. We should all root for him to do well.Kendall Hunter (Running Back) Hunter had a bad case of the dropsy's in college. He will need to hang on to the ball with all his life tonight. In some ways, he reminds me of Darnell Jefferson from the movie The Program. Hunter has one of the best cutting abilities in his rookie class. His ability to make people miss is filthy. He should break some opposing defender's ankles tonight but will need to hang on to the ball if he wants to earn his keep.Colin Jones (Safety) Colin Jones was a staple in TCU's defense last year. His best bet is to go gung ho in all these games and throw a Hail Mary up to make this team as a special teams player. With guys like C.J. Spillman (who was a special teams ace last year) and Chris Maragos Heath Miller Jersey gunning for the same job, Jones will need to stand out.Madieu Williams (Safety) Williams will most likely have a spot on this team. Although in coming over from Minnesota, there were some concerns with the injury he sustained from his neck. Some Vikings fans claim that he was hesitant to make certain tackles due to the injury opposed to before when he would just go all out. Keep your eye on this throughout the year.C.J. Spillman (Safety) Spillman was an absolute freak on special teams last year. When the Niners lost McKillop, who was the leader on special teams before he was injured, Spillman stepped in and made play after play. There is limited space on the roster. Particularly with so many safeties competing for the same spots. The cream will rise and the rest will be cut. This certainly bodes well for the 49ers secondary, though.Taylor Mays (Safety) High expectations and very little result so far.

New York Jets Where Are They Now: Doug Brien

In light of recent events, I thought it would be interesting Steelers Jerseys to take a trip down memory lane to the last time the New York Jets faced the Pittsburgh Steelers in the playoffs. We all remember it. It was back in the salad days when Chad Pennington's arm was more than just a pasta based punchline; back in the days when the Jets played to win games; and, most importantly, it was back when the Steelers, and their fans were super, super annoying. The more things change, the more they stay the same. So, lets talk to the guy who single-handedly set this franchise back a few years, and is partly responsible for a hackneyed front office's decision to draft a placekicker very, very high (47 overall!!!!) in the second round of the 2005 draft. He's got a new lease on life and some interesting insight into all things gang green. NYJFB: Hi, Doug. How are you doing?DB: Can you hang on one second, I just have to check with my manager to make sure this is OK to do on my lunch break.NJYFB: Sure, no sweat!DB: Thanks. [overheard on phone: Yeah, no I took care of it. No, it shouldn't be long at all. Well, Rashard Mendenhall Jersey they're doing a thing. I used to play football. Look - it won't take long, and I have enough fries made to survive the lunch rush.] OK, so where were we?NYJFB: We were just getting started - how are things?DB: Terrific. I'm a big contributor to my team now. Much more so than when I was kicking. As a kicker, you're always the butt of everyone's joke. Not anymore. Doug gets respect.NYJFB: Clearly. Anyway, we wanted to talk to you about your memories of that fateful night. DB: Oh yes. Prom....NYJFB: Uh, no Doug. The Steelers game. January 15, 2005. You know, when you shanked a couple field goals and cost the Jets the game? You were cut, like, three minutes after the game ended or something. DB: Ohhh. That. Well, that was a long time ago. Memory fades.NYJFB: Were you drunk?DB: It's possible. Did you see those kicks?NYJFB: Yes, Doug. Yes, we did.DB: Pretty brutal.NYJFB: So how does it feel to be responsible for the Jets drafting a placekicker with the 47th pick overall?DB: That's pretty bad. But, to be fair, you've got to be pretty stupid to do something like that. No matter how badly I missed those kicks.NYJFB: That's a fair point, Doug. So, got a prediction for the game this week?DB: 18-14, Jets.NYJFB: Chris Kemoeatu Jersey That's an odd score, two touchdowns, one 2 pt conversion and a FG?DB: Three touchdowns. Have you seen this guy Folk kick?

No Surprise Here: Rooney Family Tops 'NFL Ownership Rankings'

Perhaps this isn't the best time to be discussing the relative merits and shortcomings Steelers Authentic Jerseys of the 32 ownership groups in the NFL. I'd think it's safe to say that all of us fans -- even those of the immaculately run Pittsburgh Steelers -- are grumpy with NFL owners for their role in the ongoing NFL Lockout. But while we wait for news, let's take a look at the top ownership groups as ranked by various columnists on ESPN.ESPN.com's Ownership Power Rankings Troy Polamalu Jersey 1. Rooney family, Pittsburgh Steelers 2. Robert Kraft, New England Patriots 3. Packers board, Green Bay Packers 4. John Mara/Steve Tisch, New York Giants 5. Jeffrey Lurie, Philadelphia EaglesUnsurprisingly, the most highly regarded owners have fielded competitive teams in recent memory. I see four Super Bowl winners during the previous decade, two multiple SB winning organizations, and a team that has remained in the hunt in the NFC seemingly every year now for quite some time.AFC North Blog editor James Walker had the exact same top five, but differed in the bottom half of his top ten. You can check out the lists in their entirety here. Steve Bisciotti, owner of the Baltimore Ravens, gets some love. Frankly, I've never heard or read much about him, but Hines Ward Jersey
obviously he's done a nice job building a solid organization. I'd be curious to learn more about him, his other business ventures, and what things he does to endear himself to Ravens fans that might resonate to us in Steeler Nation.

Police probing strange Parkway death

Investigators were trying to determine what caused the bizarreactions and Pittsburgh Steelers Authentic Jerseys death of a Beechview man who caused havoc Thursday whenhe ran onto the Parkway West and fought with motorists and policeuntil he lost consciousness and died after being subdued with aTaser.Chad CekasPittsburgh police Assistant Chief Maurita Bryant said thecircumstances surrounding the death of Chad Cekas, 27, were underinvestigation by the city homicide squad and the Allegheny Countydistrict attorney's investigative unit. The cause and manner of death were undetermined. An autopsy wasperformed yesterday but toxicology tests normally take weeks tocomplete. Two officers from the Zone 3 station, one of whom fired theTaser, have been placed on administrative leave during the probe, which is routine. While the investigation was far from over, Assistant ChiefBryant said early indications were that the officers at the scenefollowed procedures."It's still under investigation but there's nothing that isobviously wrong," she said. The strange story began when Mr. Cekas went onto the busyhighway near the entrance to the Fort Pitt Tunnel and erraticallywalked between cars in moving lanes of traffic in what police saidmight have been a suicide attempt.John Novelli, supervisor of the Fort Pitt Tunnel, who was onduty at the time, said Mr. Cekas left his vehicle on Route 51 andentered the parkway "crawling on his hands and knees," about 100yards from the mouth of the tunnels. Many motorists passed by Mr. Cekas but some stopped. Among themwas James Harrison Jersey Paula Shubock, 56, of Forest Hills. She said she was coming down Green Tree hill about 8:30 p.m. andall three lanes were stopped. She got out of her car and saw Mr.Cekas, wearing a Ben Roethlisberger Steelers jersey, lying facedown on the roadway. Learning that another woman had called 911,Ms. Shubock said she apparently was the first to approach Mr.Cekas, who was flopping about on the pavement."I went up to him and said, 'Are you OK? What's going on?' Heturned his head and said, 'Please help me.' I said, 'Just restwhere you are, don't move.' I was stroking his back."Obviously, he was not in his right mind, I don't know why. Hisnose was bleeding. He looked terrified, wild-eyed."She said she got up and went back to her car to call 911 againto make sure police and medics were on their way. A yes or no for each is suffice.

Thanks.Ed Bouchette: Really, can we wait until after the Super Bowl for that one? Pittsburgh Steelers Authentic Jerseys DaBronxKid: Type here Do you foresee Bettis getting more playing time in the big game?Ed Bouchette: Only if the situation is right. This isn't a feel-good story only for Jerome. They will do whatever they must to win and how Jerome fits into that is how he will be used.Bou-Bird: Do you think that the Seahawks defense is better than the Colts or Broncos defense that were lit up the past two weeks?Ed Bouchette: I really haven't seen the Seahawks yet.DaBronxKid: Type here Ed, In the preseason Nate Washington seemed to catch everything thrown at him, and he acquitted himself very well in the brief time he played in Denver. Do you foresee the possibility of him playing the role of our "surprise sleeper" in Detroit? Thank You for a Great Year of Insider Insight. DaBronxKidEd Bouchette: I would not want to see a lot of that. I'd rather see 3 receivers and Heath Miller than four wide receiversRod__Rockville__Md._: Ed, the play made by Brett Keisel in the first quarter where he ran down Plummer was really impressive for a defensive lineman. Do you think the Steelers resign him and do you think he is ready to be a starter on this team? Is he strong enough to be an end in a 3-4 defense? Thanks.Ed Bouchette: Yes, I've said it right here before, Mike Wallace Jersey early in the season, that if they let him go he will become the next Mike Vrabel.Bou-Bird: In years past, I can remember the Patriots celebrating their AFC Championships on a stage set-up on the Heinz Field turf. Did the Steelers elect not to have the trophy presentation on the field?Ed Bouchette: No. That was a decision made by the NFL before the games this year. I was told by an NFL official before the game that if the visiting team won, it would be in the locker room because it made no sense to have the ceremony on the field before either an empty stadium or booing fans. I know some Steelers weren't happy about it because it was done in their stadium before.LosAngelesSteelers: Ed...marty ball still makes me nervous. wouldn't you like to see more passing in the second half even with a lead?Ed Bouchette: No.Tristan: I've heard a lot about how good the Seattle O-line is, will they be the best line the D has gone against all year?Ed Bouchette: Perhapswonderman: Will the Steelers be in black or white jerseys for the XL?Ed Bouchette: Cowher said today they will wear white because they are going on the road and not playing at home. I tried to goad him into whether he's superstitious and he would not bite, but you can bet on that. They wore black in Super Bowl XXX.vermont_fan: Frazier follows Harrison onto the injured list. Do you expect this to have a major impact on the recently improved (with one exception) cover squad?Ed Bouchette: No, because James Harrison will be back and recovered from his sprained ankle.Bou-Bird: How can you describe the emotion that this team has for getting Jerome Bettis to Detroit and hopefully that retirement ring?Ed Bouchette: Very strong.Rod__Rockville__Md._: Will the Chargers and Giants ever admit that they gaffed by not selecting Roethlisberger ahead of Manning and Rivers?Ed Bouchette: I would not write off those 2 quarterbacks yet, especially Manning.Bou-Bird: Do you think the hard playoff road traveled has brought this team closer? I will check with my peeps, but 1:30 Monday might work better.

NFL Draft 2011 Grades: How Should Browns, Steelers Grade Out?

SB Nations Bryan Gallifond has NFL Draft grades for all 32 teams. Its interesting stuff, Steelers Jerseys although he doesnt seem to weight traded 2012 draft picks very heavily, which leads to weirdness like the Falcons getting a higher grade (B-) than the Browns (C+). The Browns, it seems to me, pretty clearly killed it in the first round, getting a ton of value out of the No. 6 overall pick. I would give them an A, straight up, and I say this as a Steelers fan.The Chiefs get the lowest grade, with a C for reaching for Pitt receiver Jon Baldwin. The Titans and Vikings get somewhat kinder treatment for reaching for quarterbacks Jake Locker and Christian Ponder, respectively, but maybe they Ben Roethlisberger Jersey get some slack for picking quarterbacks, who tend to be unpredictable. The Steelers get a B-:The Steelers arent a team that drafts for need; they draft for depth and their system. DE Cameron Heyward addresses both, and was just about perfect value-wise. There are still glaring needs to fill, however.True, but Im not sure what grade the Troy Polamalu Jersey would have gotten had they taken a lesser talent like Aaron Williams, who fills a more obvious need. Other than getting creative by trading up or down, it isnt really clear to me what the Steelers could have done better.

2012 NFL Draft: Kelechi Osomele Tops List Of Offensive Guard Prospects To Watch

The Sittsburgh Steelers Jerseys attempted to address the team's thin offensive line in the 2011 NFL Draft by selecting Marcus Gilbert out of Florida with their second-round pick. But the line is likely to be a priority in the 2012 draft as well, so Behind The Steel Curtaintakes a lookat the draft's top offensive guard prospects: Kelechi Osomele (Iowa State), David DeCastro (Stanford), Cordy Glenn (Georgia), Kevin Zeitler (Wisconsin), and Ryan Miller (Colorado). Here's BTSC on Osomele:At this moment Osemele is the cream of crop with regards to the guard position. He plays left tackle for the Cyclones but will have to switch to guard or right tackle in the pros. While he does Heath Miller Jersey possess good agility for his size, he doesn’t exactly have enough lateral agility to protect a quarterback’s blind side, although neither does Max Starks, so I guess Osemele could theoretically play left tackle. Where he really shines is as a run blocker. He’s an absolute mauler and would seem like a great fit for the Steelers' offensive line. In fact, many of the early mock drafts around the web have the Steelers selecting Osemele in the first round. There's plenty of time before the 2011 college football season even starts, of course, but Osomele is definitely Hines Ward Jersey one to keep an eye on.Walter Football's most recent mock has the Steelers taking Osomele. The Steelers acquired Marcus Gilbert in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft, but he's not enough. Another upgrade is needed up front, and Kelechi Osemele fits Pittsburgh's blocking scheme.

Into the Green

To achieve Speed Racer's unique retro-futuristic, heightened reality look, all the live-action Rosetta Stone sequences were shot on a soundstage against a green screen, so that it could be composited together with computer-generated or computer-manipulated material. The set reminded John Goodman of a bare bones Off-Off Broadway production of Our Town he once did in a church basement without scenery or props, and he says it helped him focus even more on his acting. But the close quarters got to Hirsch. He and the other drivers spent many hours inside car cockpits attached to a moving platform called a gimbal. They're slamming you around in this simulator, and it's hot and there are lights on you and you can't move because you're strapped in. You get frustrated to the point where you want to rip the thing apart, says Hirsch, who got his share of bruises. Matthew Fox got it worse, though. Rosetta Stone Software Photo courtesy of Warner Bros. PicturesEmile Hirsch as Speed Racer darts through a race in Speed Racer. At one point, Ricci was tossed around so much she got motion sickness and had to step out to get sick. She insists she had a good time in the cockpit, anyway.- Shooting in the controlled green screen environment actually saved money, notes Silver. And it was all shot digitally. It's a matter of years when film won't be a factor anymore, he predicts. It's going to make it a lot easier to make movies. Nevertheless, he proclaims Speed Racer was a technical nightmare to achieve. After all, there were about 2,000 effects shots that were created or manipulated via computer software. Every frame in some aspect has had some level of beautification or texture or color added to it in order to fit it into the universe, says VFX supervisor and Matrix movies alumnus John Gaeta, noting that most shots underwent the most sophisticated digital color grading ever. Gaeta first strategized about the project with the Wachowskis over a few months starting in May 2006. While they wanted to be true to the spirit of the original cartoon, they decided to go the full-blown, stylistic, expressive anime route, and needed to explore what action looks like and create a balance between reality and spectacle. Speed Stunts The cars weren't the only acrobatic elements in Speed Racer ; several actors were called upon to do some high-flying fight stunts. Matthew Fox completed all of his stunts himself. And Emile Hirsch enjoyed the training sessions with stunt coordinators Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, veterans of the Matrix flicks. But John Goodman was Rosetta Stone Spanish (Latin) apprehensive about the physical stresses. My knees and shoulder are pretty heavily riddled with arthritis, he explains. When I'm working on a stunt fight I've got to admit to myself that I've got to tone it down a bit because somebody else could get hurt.

How Anger Can Destroy A Relationship

"Dr. Fiore," the voice on the phone pleaded, "I need anger management classes Authentic Baseball Jersey right away.I blew up at my girlfriend last night and she said it's over until I get help."As Kevin recounted the first night of anger management class, he and his girlfriend had argued in the car over which route to take home from a party. Events progressed from mild irritation, to yelling and name calling.Things escalated at home. He tried to escape, but she followed him from room to room, demanding resolution of the conflict. He became angry, defensive and intimidating. Frightened, she left. Later, she left an anguished message saying that she loved him, but couldn't deal with his angry, hurtful outbursts. Kevin said that he normally is a very "nice" and friendly person. But, on this occasion, his girlfriend had been drinking before the party. In his view, she was irrational, and non-stop in criticism. He tried to reason with her, but it just made things worse. Finally, as Kevin saw things,in desperation he "lost it" and became enraged. How should Kevin have handled this situation? What could he have done differently? What actions should you take in similar situations?OPTION 1:RETEAT AND THINK THINGS OVERTake a 20 minute time-out (but commit to returning later to work on the issue). Take a walk. Calm yourself down. Breath deeply. Meditate. Do something else for awhile. New reasearch by John Gottman, Ph.D., at the University of Washington indicates that when you and your partner argue, your pulse rate goes high, and you enter a physiological state called DPA (diffuse physiological arousal). Alfredo Aceves Jersey Once there, it becomes nearly impossible to solve the problem. You lose perspective. Your reasoning ability, memory, and judgment, greatly decline. Retreating and thinking things over allows both of you to return to your normal state of mind.It is neither healthy or necessary for you to explode as a result of being provoked by your partner. Our recommendation: Turn the heat down rather than intensifying the pressure.OPTION 2: INTERACT DIFFERENTLYMany couples like Keith and his partner develop patterns of behavior that create miscommunication and conflict. Do you interact in one, or more, of these ways? AVOID THESE NEGATIVE PATTERNS:INATTENTION - simply ignoring your partner when you shouldn't. This is also called stonewalling, or being emotionally unavailable when your partner needs you, or not speaking to your partner for long periods because you are upset with them.INTIMIDATION-engaging in behavior intended to make your partner do things out of fear. This includes yelling, screaming, threatening, and posturing in a threatening way.MANIPULATION-doing or saying things to influence your partner, for your benefit, instead of theirs. HOSTILITY-using sarcasm, put-downs,and antagonistic remarks. Extreme or prolonged hostility leads to contempt which is a major predictor of divorce. VENGEANCE- the need to "get even" with your partner for a grievance you have against them. Many dysfunctional couples "keep score," and are constantly trying to "pay back" each other for offenses. CRITICISM-involves attacking someone's personality or character, rather than a specific behavior, often coupled with blame. Like contempt, criticism is a second major predictor of divorce. DEVELOP POSITIVE INTERACTIONSStart by actually listening not only to what your partner says, but what he or she means. Partners in conflict are not listening to understand; rather, they listen with their answer running because they are defensive. Unfortunately, defensiveness is another predictor of divorce.Stick to the issue at hand. Seems obvious but is very hard to do in the heat of battle. Focus and stay in the present.LEARN TO FORGIVEResearch by Peter Larson, Ph.D., at the Smalley Relationship Center, suggests a huge relationship between marriage satisfaction Andy Pettitte Jersey and forgiveness. As much as one-third of marriage satisfaction is related to forgiveness!Communicate your feelings and needs. Tell your partner how you feel about what they do, instead of accusing them of deliberately offensive behavior. Use "I" statements rather than accusatory, or "you," statements. Learn to communicate unmet needs so that your partner can better understand and respond to you.For instance, If you are feeling fear, it may be your need for emotional safety and security that is not being met; communicating this is far more effective than lashing out at your partner in an angry tirade.

The Difference in the Education of Boys and Girls

As a general rule, boys don't even include games with relationship New York Yankees Jerseys and domestic themes in their repertoire. Think about it: While no preschool dress-up corner would be complete without bridal costumes, you never see tuxedos for little pretend grooms! Where does this difference in play styles between boys and girls originate? Because it occurs in virtually every culture, this is caused mostly by biology rather than by socialization. But whether nature or nurture is the cause of these differences, their effect is undeniable. Because their play emphasizes social interactions and feelings, girls undergo an extensive education into emotions by childhood's end. Boys learn how to pitch overhand. A boy's experience at playing cooperatively and quickly resolving conflicts will be an asset later in the boardroom or on the construction site, but it will be a liability in marriage if it comes at the Mickey Mantle Jersey expense of understanding the emotions behind his wife's perspectives. This difference in training is heightened by the fact that as they get older, boys rarely play with girls, so they miss the chance to learn from them. Although about 35 percent of preschool best friendships are between boys and girls,by age seven that percentage plummets to virtually 0 percent. From then till puberty the sexes will have little or nothing to do with each other. This is a worldwide phenomenon. Many explanations have been given for this voluntary segregation. At around ages five to seven, girls become fed up with this state of affairs and stop wanting to play with boys. From that age until puberty, our culture (and virtually all others) offers no formal structure for ensuring that boys and girls continue to interact. Research shows that a husband who can accept influence from his wife also tends to be an outstanding father. He is familiar with his children's world and knows all about their friends and their fears. Because Mike Mussina Jersey he is not afraid of emotions, he teaches his children to respect their own feelings--and themselves. He turns off the football game for them, too, because he wants them to remember him as having had time for them.

Nationwide, Wyckoff ranks 53rd in 100 highest-income places in the United States (with a population of at least 10,000). Statewide, Wyckoff ranks 44th in the New Jersey locations by per capita income. From the mid-18th century, what is now Wyckoff was a community within Franklin Township, which consisted of most of northern Bergen County west of the Saddle River. Starting in the 1840s, several new municipalities were created from portions of Franklin Township, so that today what is now Wyckoff borders eight different communities. Wyckoff was formed as a township by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on November 2, 1926, replacing Franklin Township, based on the results of a referendum held that day. Portions of Wyckoff were ceded to Midland Park based on the results of a referendum held on June 9, 1931.[7]The most commonly given origin for the name Wyckoff, which was the origin accepted by the town committee when the town was established, is that Wyckoff is from the Lenape word "wickoff", meaning high ground, or that it is from "wickok" meaning water. Another theory is that the town was named for Brooklyn judge Lou Gehrig Jersey Pieter Claesen Wyckoff (1625–1694). The surname comes from the Dutch words "Wyk," meaning parish and "Hof," meaning court. None of these origins is supported with solid historical evidence. The town has 13 churches, one synagogue, five public schools, three volunteer fire stations, and one volunteer ambulance corps.

Geography of Africa

In AfricaVarious forms of government can be Rosetta Stone Language found in Africa. Morocco is a monarchy. Virtually all other African countries are republics, at least in name. Their constitutions usually provide for the forms of parliamentary democracy, but many of them are virtual dictatorships. Some of these governments are based on military power; others are one-party regimes that prohibit political opposition. The reasons for the often undemocratic nature and, even more frequently, unstable character of African governments are many. There is a high rate of illiteracy. Trained leaders are scarce. There is little unity within the countries. When the European powers Language Learning Software carved out their colonial empires, they drew arbitrary boundaries, often without regard for the ethnic makeup of the people. When the colonies became independent, they inherited those boundaries, so that many African countries have populations consisting of members of a number of peoples, with different languages and cultural heritages. And agitation for ethnic unity, which would require the redrawing of national boundaries, is a source of unrest.Another problem is economic. According to 19th-century economic theory, the purpose of colonies was to provide raw materials for the industries of the colonial power. As a result, little was done to develop industry in the colonies themselves. In addition, many African countries are poor in natural resources. Both these countries and those whose resources are underdeveloped must rely on economic aid from other countries.Almost all the African countries are members of the African Union. The AU works to promote economic and political cooperation. The AU consists of several administrative bodies, including a Pan-African Parliament and a Peace and Security Council. These bodies are set up to promote good government, justice, and peace across Africa. Almost all the Rosetta Stone Hindi African countries are members of the African Union. (See African Union.) Other inter-African organizations include the African Development Bank, Economic Community of West African States, and Southern African Development Community.

But how many pockets do you have? Handheld devices become as clunky as a room-sized supercomputer when you have to carry four of them around with you every day.A smartphone is one device that can take care of all of your handheld computing and communication needs in a single, small package. It's not so much a distinct class of products as it is a different set of standards for cell phones to live up to. This article explores what makes a cell phone a smartphone, how the idea came about and what you can do with it.More on PhonesPopular Cell Phones-How the iPhone WorksDiscovery.com: Phone Users Tracked--Unlike many traditional cell phones, smartphones allow individual users to install, configure and run applications of their choosing. A Language Learning Software smartphone offers the ability to conform the device to your particular way of doing things. Most standard cell-phone software offers only limited choices for re-configuration, forcing you to adapt to the way it's set up. Geography of Laos

Laos is a country in Southeast Asia.Laos, or Lao People's Democratic Rosetta Stone Language Republic, a landlocked country of southeast Asia. It lies principally within the Indochinese Peninsula and is bordered by China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Burma.Forested mountains cover much of Laos, leaving only a few expanses of level or treeless land. The north consists almost entirely of a series of steep ranges extending roughly northeast-southwest. Between them swift-flowing rivers run through narrow gorges. One of the few relatively flat areas in the north is a broad plateau north of Xiang-khoang; it lies about 4,000 feet (1,200 m) above sea level. Just to the south is the country's highest peak, Phou Bia, reaching 9,252 feet (2,820 m).Marking much of the boundary with Vietnam is the Annam Cordillera, a steep mountain chain stretching out from the northern highlands. With peaks up to nearly 9,000 feet (2,700 m) and only a few passes, the cordillera is an effective natural barrier. West of the chain are Language Learning Software the only extensive lowlands in Laos, in the valleys of the Mekong River and its southern tributaries. The Mekong flows the entire length of Laos and receives the discharge of nearly every stream in the country. Along its banks are most of the larger towns and much of the farmland.Eastern Asia's monsoons strongly influence the climate, which is tropical and has heavy, seasonal rainfall. Some 50 to 90 or more inches (1,270 to 2,290 mm) of rain falls annually, most of it from May to October during the summer monsoon. Temperatures are usually high, averaging from 90° F. Microprocessor Logic

Photo courtesy Intel CorporationIntel Pentium 4 processor Rosetta Stone To understand how a microprocessor works, it is helpful to look inside and learn about the logic used to create one. In the process you can also learn about assembly language -- the native language of a microprocessor -- and many of the things that engineers can do to boost the speed of a processor.A microprocessor executes a collection of machine instructions that tell the processor what to do. Based on the instructions, a microprocessor does three basic things:Using its ALU (Arithmetic/Logic Unit), a microprocessor can perform mathematical operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Modern microprocessors contain complete floating point processors that can perform extremelysophisticated operations on large floating point numbers.A microprocessor can move data from one memory location to another.A microprocessor can make decisions and jump to a new set of instructions based on those decisions. There may be very sophisticated things that a microprocessor does, but those are its three basic activities. The following diagram shows an extremely simple microprocessor capable of doing those three things:This is about Rosetta Stone Software as simple as a microprocessor gets. This microprocessor has:An address bus (that may be 8, 16 or 32 bits wide) that sends an address to memoryA data bus (that may be 8, 16 or 32 bits wide) that can send data to memory or receive data from memoryAn RD (read) and WR (write) line to tell the memory whether it wants to set or get the addressed locationA clock line that lets a clock pulse sequence the processorA reset line that resets the program counter to zero (or whatever) and restarts executionLet's assume that both the address and data buses are 8 bits wide in this example. Here are the components of this simple microprocessor:Registers A, B and C are simply latches made out of flip-flops. (See the section on edge-triggered latches in How Boolean Logic Works for details.)The address latch is just like registers A, B and C.The program counter is a latch with the extra ability to increment by 1 when told to do so, and also to reset to zero when told to do so.The ALU could be as simple as an 8-bit adder (see the section on adders in How Boolean Logic Works for details), or it might be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide 8-bit values. Let's assume the latter here. The test register is a special latch that can hold values from comparisons performed in the ALU. An ALU can normally compare two numbers and determine if they are equal, if one is greater than the other, etc. The test register can also normally hold a carry bit from the last stage of the adder. It stores these values in flip-flops and then the instruction decoder can use the values to make decisions. There are six boxes marked 3-State in the diagram. These are tri-state buffers. A tri-state buffer can pass a 1, a 0 or it can essentially disconnect its output (imagine a switch that totally disconnects the output line from the wire that the output is heading toward). A tri-state buffer allows multiple outputs to connect to a wire, but only one of them to actually drive a 1 or a 0 onto the line. The instruction register and instruction decoder are responsible for controlling all of the other components.Helpful ArticlesHow Bytes and Bits WorkHow Boolean Logic WorksHow Electronic Gates WorkAlthough they are not shown in this diagram, there would be control lines from the instruction decoder that would:Tell the A register to latch the value currently on the data busTell the B register to latch the value currently on the data busTell the C register to latch the value currently output by the ALUTell the program counter register to latch the value currently on the data busTell the address register to latch the value currently on the data busTell the instruction register to latch the value currently on the data busTell the program counter to incrementTell the program counter to reset to zeroActivate any of the six tri-state buffers (six separate lines)Tell the ALU what operation to performTell the test register to latch the Chinese Learning Software ALU's test bitsActivate the RD lineActivate the WR lineComing into the instruction decoder are the bits from the test register and the clock line, as well as the bits from the instruction register.

5 Reasons You Regain Weight - What Causes Weight Regain

I once worked with a client who told me, "There seem to be two phases of weight loss: Rosetta Stone Language The phase where you lose the weight and then the phase where you gain it back. Guess which phase I'm in?"Unfortunately, she's not alone. Most of us have lost weight at one time or another (some of us, many times), but the biggest struggle is keeping it off. There are no exact numbers on how many people regain weight, but some estimates suggest that it's anywhere from 80 percent to a whopping 95 percent. There are things working against us when it comes to maintaining weight loss, some of which we can't control (such as our DNA) and others we can (such as how much time we spend sitting around). Either way, knowing what's in store for you after you lose the weight can help you keep it off for good.Beyond Weight LossWe often focus so much energy on losing weight, we're completely unprepared for what happens when we actually lose it. We often have the belief that, once we lose the weight, we're home free. We can finally get back to normal life, a life that doesn't involve monitoring every bite, watching portion sizes, following that diet or going to the gym every day. The truth is, you have to do at least the same amount of work to maintain your weight loss as you did to lose it in the first place, perhaps even more. Knowing that, and understanding the factors that can contribute to weight regain, can help you stop the cycle for good. Why You Regain the Weight1. Unrealistic Diets and Exercise ProgramsOne major reason we regain weight is because, in an effort to lose weight fast, we often follow unrealistic diets that are simply not sustainable for the long term. It may be a fad diet (such as the Master Cleanse), a very low Rosetta Stone Software calorie diet or a commercial diet that restricts so many food groups, you end up binging on the very foods you're not allowed to eat. If you add in an unrealistic exercise program, say going from very little exercise to seven days at the gym, it's easy to see why weight regain is so common. While you might lose weight initially, these extreme diets and exercise programs require such drastic changes that you can only follow them for a short period of time. By restricting what you eat and working out like crazy, you might lose weight but you never learn how to change your habits for good. Losing weight too quickly can also have some unpleasant side effects such as: Physical problems - Losing a lot of weight very quickly can cause dizziness, fatigue, headaches, constipation, gallstones and, for some, loose skin that may require surgery.Loss of muscle - When you lose weight quickly, especially if you're dieting without exercise, you not only lose fat, you lose muscle as well. That not only slows your metabolism (which contributes to even more weight gain), you may end up with more body fat after weight regain, leaving you worse off than you were before. Misery - Many diets are so restrictive, you cut out entire food groups, leaving you feeling hungry and deprived. Jumping into extreme exercise without slowly building strength and stamina leaves you sore, exhausted and burned out. Taking It SlowIf you want long-term weight loss, you need long-term change..a lifestyle change. Changing lifelong habits takes time and requires learning a variety of new skills and habits, something that doesn't happen overnight. You have to learn how to exercise: What you enjoy, how much you can handle, how to fit it into your schedule and how to stay motivated on a daily basis. You also have to learn how to eat - How to monitor your portions, how to avoid emotional eating and how many calories you need. Aside from exercise and eating, there are other issues you may have to deal that contribute to weight gain such as stress and lack of sleep, However, the most important thing you have to learn is how to lose weight slowly. Not just the physical components of eating and exercising, but the psychological aspects as well. Many of us want to see instant changes on the scale but, slow weight loss means weeks or months before seeing significant changes. Learning to lose weight slowly means: Forgetting about weight loss - It sounds counterintuitive, but one of the best ways to lose weight is to forget about losing weight. Instead of asking, "How much weight did I lose this week?" it's about asking, "How much exercise did I get this week? Was I careful with my diet most of the time? If you're able to do that, the weight loss will happen. Learning to Enjoy Healthy Eating and Exercise - To many of us, the words 'healthy Rosetta Stone Greek eating' and 'exercise' do not inspire any sort of enjoyment. However, as you practice both of these skills, you start to feel good, which goes a long way towards motivating you to keep going. Remember the benefits of what you're doing and that weight loss is only one of them.Next: Can losing weight actually cause you to regain it?
