TheLincoln Rotary Club combined with Lincoln and DistrictCommunity Care, the Lincoln Community Committee and theLincoln Business Association, to organise the festival atthe Lincoln Community Hall. Their reason: "Lincoln and theneighbouring areas house a cross Rosetta Stone Chinese section of New Zealandmulti-ethnicity: the university, research centres, schoolsand businesses bring to us the talent and diversity ofpeople from many nationalities and cultures. What a greatopportunity for Lincoln, Christchurch and Canterbury atlarge to enjoy the arts, crafts and food that many of thosecultures now offer us." There were Japanese, African,Korean, Chinese, Indian, Iranian, South African,Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and Scottish stalls and an evenwider variety of entertainment (including a highly populardose of Bollywood). It was opened by Selwyn DistrictCouncil Mayor Michael McEvedy and all rounded off in thegood old Kiwi tradition of a cup of tea, savouries andcakes. Following ameeting of ethnic groups facilitated by the WellingtonEthnic Council and Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast inearly 2002, the Dominion Post researched and published aseries of 52 articles on people from different ethnic groupsin the Wellington region. These have been collated into abook, which was launched in Wellington on 25 June.
